Cycling in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is known for its cycling routes! Quiet farm roads surround it, and magnificent mountain climbs as well as endless single tracks. It is no wonder it forms part of the prestigious Cape Epic. Stellenbosch is often referred to as the mountain biking capital of South Africa.
The town itself is relatively flat and is best to be explored by bike. There are many coffee shops to stop at for a mid-ride snack. And with your car rental, it’s only a short drive away.
Here are five routes you should explore:
Jonkershoek
Jonkershoek is the valley just outside of Stellenbosch. The 7km road from town to the Jonkershoek gate is exquisite and offer some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Under the old trees as you wind through the valley, passing vineyards and cafes. It is truly magnificent. At the end of the valley, you get to Jonkershoek Nature Reserve. This 204-hectare reserve boasts some of the best trails in the world. It has even been used for enduro championships! However, there are also many jeep tracks for those wanting a relaxed ride.
G-Spot
Another epic place for riding are the G-spot trails situated right in the centre of Stellenbosch. At the top of Kronedal road. The trails have now received international status and offer a whale of a time for keen mountain bikers. Use the Stellenbosch Trail Fund manicured trails to get to the G-spot from Stellenbosch town.
The trail is managed by Stellenbosch Trail Fund and consists of fun and flowy trails.
Helshoogte
This magnificent pass is world-renowned for its challenging climb. With a 10% gradient in the first 500m, it is no wonder that it is dreaded. But when you get to the top, you have a panorama view of the mountain range!
Boschendal
Why not ride at one of South Africa’s oldest vineyards? The farm has excellent food, great wine and a lot of history!
Boschendal hosted part of the 2016 Cape Epic and since has opened its trails to the public. With five marked trails ranging from 4 – 23 kilometres and varying in difficulty, there is fun for most riders, no matter your skills.
Helderberg
Helderberg trails are on a private farm in the Helderberg mountains. These trails offer superb views over False Bay and surround. The farm prides itself on providing trails for all riders, no matter the age or skill level!
The farm also boasts a braai area and bike wash area, making it the perfect place for a days outing!
With so many routes around the Stellenbosch area, it can often be difficult to choose. But rest assured if you are an all-out Mountain Biker, an experienced roadie, or even if it’s your first time getting onto the bike – Stellenbosch and its surrounding areas have a lot to offer. And if you need a bike, the Adventure Shop in Stellenbosch offers affordable bike rental!
